Playing On for the Community – FHHS Students Make Community Service Priority

FHHS Girls’ Basketball team volunteers for Salvation Army in December.

Win the game – that’s the goal of every team. For the students who participate in activities, clubs, and sports at Francis Howell High School, however, winning the game isn’t everything. Helping their community win is also their goal, a goal these students have truly scored.

All programs at FHHS are actively involved in giving back to the community and scoring the karma points that come from outreach and service to others. Activities Director Sean Erwin said, “I’m proud of our activities, clubs, and sports at Howell and their efforts to provide outreach and service to our community. Being involved in our community and greater causes is an emphasis of our programs.”

During first semester the Vikings volunteered 1,142 hours and raised $25,062 for various charities. “We have developed a culture of helping and caring for others through the efforts of our activities programs,” Erwin said. “There is so much to be gained from participation in activities, clubs, and sports at Howell, and this is just one of the many ways our programs are helping others while further developing leadership capacity and lifelong skills that will make our participants successful well beyond high school.

These students appreciate the support their community has given them during their athletic and academic careers in FHSD, and giving back in whatever capacity they can is how they hope to repay that support. Being a part of a program at FHHS is more than just being a leader on a team or club – it’s about being a leader in the community.

These FHHS activities, clubs, and sports worked to support 31 different programs or charities in the community, once again showing how they brighten our evenings – whether it’s the football team under the Friday night lights, or students trekking the Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Thank you to all Howell family members that helped to support these great efforts. Here are some of the organizations that benefitted from the support of FHHS student volunteerism during first semester:
